A Guide to Bikepacking Fiji
Cycle tours and bikepacking is popular in countries around the world. But did you know that Fiji is an unexpected tropical destination for a two-wheel adventure?
Highlights
Explore on bike a country that not many get the chance to discover.
Incredible coastal views of the beach and reef along the journey.
Admire the mountain region whilst passing though the main areas of Fiji.
Endless amount of bua (coconut) stops along the way to stay hydrated.
The happiest Fijians who wave, smile, and welcome you with open arms.
timeframe
I planned for a five day ride around the island, however I completed the lap in three days. I would recommend between five to eight days depending on your cycling fitness.
Time of year
The dry season is from May - October where the temperatures are fairly consistent ranging from 17 - 28°C , sunny, and perfect in my opinion. I rode the route over Easter Weekend in March and had showers and humidity. I would caution against December - February as the heat and humidity would add further considerations to the ride.
Distance
The total distance is between 470 - 490km. This is dependent on additional sights and the route you can take.
RISKS
The main risk to consider is that vehicles are not accustomed to bicycles on the road. Bikes are relatively new in Fiji and so drivers are not aware for leaving enough space to safely overtake.
There are no bike lanes therefore requires cycling on the main road.
It's an individual choice whether you are comfortable cycling with these conditions knowing your own individual fitness, past experience, and confidence level.
Route OPTIONS
The benefit of traveling by bike is that you dictate how far and fast you want to ride. I decided to push my physical limits and cycle in three days when despite initially planning five.
If time is available, I would recommend riding along the east coast of the island towards Dawasamu. However note there is a big climb from Rakiraki out to the coastal route. I heard from other riders who have taken the eastern coastal route that accommodation at Natalei Eco Lodge was worthwhile. Here are their contact details: nataleiecolodgefj@gmail.com +6799916338.
I opted to stay on Kings Rd which stayed inland through to Korovou.
Regardless of what option you choose, I’ve listed some suggested itineraries for your ride.

Accommodation
Camping and camp sites are very limited/ non-existent in most of these areas in Fiji. As a result, accommodation options are limited to AirBnbs, homestays, lodges, or resorts. The benefit of these options is that it takes the guess work out of where to sleep.
Thankfully there are many areas along the way to stop, recover, and find accommodation. The image below shows some of the main places to find accommodation and will have access to many facilities. The stretch of road from Pacific Harbour to Sigatoka is known as the Coral Coast, and has multiple options of accommodation to choose from.

Additional tips
Keep an eye out for Ratu Udre Udre's burial ground in Rakiraki District, Ra Province. Ratu Udre Udre is listed by Guinness World Records as "most prolific cannibal" during the early 19th century where he reportedly ate 999 people.
Aside from the best hydration fuel of a fresh coconut, known as bu (green coconut ready for drinking), my favourite snack is a fresh pineapple with mango skin powder. Word of warning, try not to get the mango skin powder on your hands as it stains and takes long to disappear.
For those who scuba dive, I would recommend diving out of Port Denarau, Nadi with Whitetip Marine Adventures. I have also heard the bull shark dive out of Pacific Harbour is highly recommended.
When you pass through towns, search for a bakery and try a cream bun. You won’t regret it.
Finally, enjoy the ride and embrace the kindness of Fijians. It is a special country that holds a dear place in my heart.
Vinaka vaka levu.
